Whilst overseas in April, the 'Swine Flu' became front page news. Panic set in and built momentum as adults and children in Mexico died after contracting the virus. Very quickly more countries were added to a list of where Swine Flu or H1N1 had infiltrated. People wearing masks started to become a more common occurrence. On my return to Australia, thermal imaging had been set up as we disembarked to detect anyone with a raised temperature. In concert with WHO, individual countries established various strategies to contain the spread of the virus. Here in Australia our fearless leader advised us as follows `Each one of us can take steps to avoid the spread of the flu by simple things: firstly, washing your hands often and thoroughly; secondly, covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze and cough; and, thirdly, disposing of used tissues in the bin''. We were comforted knowing that 'the Health authorities had stockpiled 50 million surgical masks - at least two for every Australian - and were ready to hand them out if a swine flu pandemic is declared here', "The masks are stashed around Australia with stocks of anti-viral drugs, ready to be deployed at short notice. They are considered an effective flu prevention measure, together with hand washing and eye protection." - heraldsun.com.au assured us. In addition, we were advised to make sure our pantrys were well stocked should we be quarantined...... Mmmm, lets look at some of this advice. Washing our hands is a good idea as is covering your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze but consider this. Someone who is unknowingly carrying the infection (incubation period) coughs or sneezes and covers with their hand. They go to wash their hands and put their germ carrying hand on the handle of the bathroom door, then on the tap to turn it on. They THOROUGHLY wash their hands, then use those hands to turn the contaminated tap off. Dry their hands (fraught with its own dangers depending on the method) and then open the door using the handle they previously contaminated. What a waste of energy, soap and water! Masks protect other people from your germs, not you from theirs. Surgeons wear them when operating to prevent their germs getting into the open body. As for anti-virals taken preventatively, well great. Lets just develop an immunity so that, should something really dangerous eventuate we won't have any medicine to use against it. And that's just one reason why that's not a great idea. Not once has ANYONE been advised to do the one thing even The Father of The Germ Theory of Medicine, Loius Pastuer admitted, albeit on his deathbed, was the most essential factor in preventing disease. “It is not the germ that causes disease, but the terrain in which the germ is found” Pasteur stated while recanting his Germ Theory. The terrain being a healthy body. A healthy body allows for a full powered Immune system - which is our default position should the healthy body not be enough. Disease thrives on unhealthy tissue. Rudolph Virchow the Father of Pathology is quoted saying "If I could live my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat—diseased tissue—rather than being the cause of the diseased tissue; e.g., mosquitoes seek the stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to become stagnant" Currently I am surrounded by people who have succumbed to 'the flu'. One by one they have infected each other - my parents, my sisters and their families, my husband and children not to forget the nearly hundreds of people I mix with in numerous workplaces and homes where I give my presentations. Assorted family and friends have advised 'don't come too close', for fear of me catching the lurgy they are accomodating. It appears to be a given that in winter we all have to succumb to at least a cold if not 'the flu', not so, but if you do STAY HOME! To date I remain 'disease free'. Why????. It's quite simple really, as simple as 'washing hands' and far more enjoyable. I ensure I am well nourished. My diet is altered according to the weather change, utilising the principles of various traditional medicine practises. I remain well hydrated and keep my body warm but not over heated. My exercise regime is altered to remain active while not over stressing my body. Daily I try to get about 10mins of the suns rays on my skin. Of course meditation continues as does lots of laughter to gain all the health benefits both activities deliver. Usually I don't support taking handfuls of supplements but as the weather cools I do include a tonic of immune herbs in addition to vitamin/minerals/antioxidant formulas as and when necessary. Basically I live to the seasons, in synch with nature (more in depth information is available from the TRUE 2 YOU Immune Presentation. Click here) I'm not saying I won't contract something but at least I know I have done all I can to protect myself and also have my body in the best shape to recuperate quickly and effectively.
